Feathers
I always use colored papers. You will be fighting the white paper every step of the way. Make your life easier and choose a color that is in the mid tones of your piece. Here I've used a blue/grey color.

I start with the eye. I then burnish it down until no paper shows.

Here is a close up of the eye.

Next is the beak. I burnish to make it look solid.

First I lay down the dark areas. This is the various feather groups.
5
Then I pick out the highlights. These steps are done lightly, I'm just blocking in.
6
I'm using grey here. It's hard to see because the color is the same as the paper, but it's necessary so the next shades don't get too dark.
7
Still more, back and forth with the lights and darks just filling in the paper.

I'll stop here for now and start blocking in the breast feathers. I'll come back and adjust the colors. I don't want to go too dark.

The back of the neck is the same steps only I try to make them a little warmer. Dark, highlights, then mid tones.

I'll stop here for now. They might need to be darker but I want to get the rest of the feathers in.

The back feathers are done the opposite way. I start with the lightest areas first. This lays down the feathers edges.
12
I build each feather one at a time and get the shading of each one down.

Here's a close up of how I do the feathers. Always follow the direction of the barbs. First the lightest areas and the shaft.
14
Then I come back and indicate where the shadows are.
15
Back & forth with the various shades of grey to fill in the feather being careful not to loose the highlights.
16
I've done a few more to show that every now and again, I'll go back and add some shadows or splits in the feathers.
17
A few more. I do each one separately. If you try to do them all the same time, they end up looking all the same. This way they are all slightly diff
18
I work the highlights first, then the medium shades.
19
I go back with a light brown to warm the feathers up. The feathers of a peregrine are odd, they are blue/grey, but with a warm overtone.

Here is the piece so far. I'm almost finished with the wing feathers.
21
Phew! Finally finished the last feather. I might go back and darken these. Don't know just yet.
22
Finished blocking in the breast area. I left some of the paper showing through as some of my shadows.
23
I worked back and forth with the white, creams and reds to get the shading just right and fill in the paper.
24
I adjust the colors here and there, making some areas darker and filling in the paper a bit more. It's Finished.
